I'm sure most of you are familiar with the "80/20 Rule":

We wear 20% of our wardrobe 80% of the time.
80% or our revenues come from 20% or our clients/customers.

The same is true of working. 80% of our results come from 20% of our effort. Let me repeat that: 80% of our results come from 20% of our work. Which is good news...and bad.

The bad news is that most of us are overworking by a substantial margin. Matter of fact overworking impedes our results. Why? Because we are so busy running around we are not stopping to consider whether this work is getting us the results we want. Because we produce poor quality work that needs to be redone, or make errors that require additional time to correct. In other words, we are working hard but not necessarily productively. Which causes us to work much longer than if we slowed down and focused on our work and used our energy efficiently.

The good news is that we can work less and still see the same results. Actually, we may produce even BETTER results. Two studies on athletic performance illustrate that working hard does not generate the best results. In both studies athletes were divided into several groups. The members of each group were instructed to allocate their time in a particular way. For example, some groups were instructed to spend all their time practicing their sport. Other groups were instructed to divide their time between practicing the sport and visualizing the movements and outcomes they wanted from their performance. In one of the studies the group that improved the least was the one whose members spent all of their time training. In both studies the groups that spent more time visualizing outperformed the groups that spent more time working. So, why ARE we working so hard?!

The challenge for us is to adopt a new belief system and change long standing habits. The puritan work ethic is deeply embedded in our culture and psyche. "You have to work hard to get ahead" and "hard work pays off" are just two of the many work related "truisms" that have been drilled into us since childhood. In contrast it is interesting to note that the Chinese symbol for the word "busy" is composed of two symbols: heart and killing. That's a rather sobering image.

Although he claimed that he was very serious about overcoming procrastination; however he still holds the belief in himself that he could not possibly change.

Now if you were like my friend thinking that you cannot change for the better, then you are right. Nobody can possibly force you to change unless you want to.

Even if your loved ones managed to change you, without your consent, the change won't be permanent.

Therefore, it must be from your heart that says "I am willing to change NOW."

Another thing you need to be aware of is your mental locks. Every successful people have been preaching about the importance of having to guard your mind from thoughts that will destroy your expectation of success.

That is one very crucial key to understand and practice in order to break the chains of having to live a life of procrastination and mediocrity.

Now read through the sentences below and take note which statements most resonate with you:

• Creativity doesn't suit me. I'm more of a logical person.
• If you want great visibility, stay at where you are.
• Rules are meant to be followed.
• Logical! That's more like me!
• No!! I do not want to make any mistakes.
• I don't want to do it. If it doesn't work, I'll look like a fool.
• I not in charge of that and I don't want to have any connection with it.
• Let's be more practical about this!

When did you last said or hold thoughts about those statements? Is it very often?

Now the reason for having you do the short quiz is not to embarrass you. My intention is to give you a clearer picture of what has been in your mind all these while.

What you think is often what you get. Therefore, if you continue to hold self defeating thoughts, it will be quite hard for you to truly overcome procrastination and achieve success in life.

Remember, it all first starts in your mind. And let me tell you something. It does take a lot of determination and perseverance to break free from the clutches of procrastination.

Some very successful people I know of are also engaging in a war against procrastination daily. Therefore, if you were thinking that successful people were people who had truly conquered procrastination, think again.

I know it is not easy to totally get rid of those mental locks as they tend to seep into your mind when you do not pay attention to them.

Now, don't beat yourself up if you catch yourself holding those self defeating thoughts. It takes some time, effort and perseverance to truly keep them out of your mind.

Keep your sense of humor for they can prove to be invaluable in your quest in overcoming procrastination and filling your mind with positive and resourceful thoughts and beliefs.

So what is your choice? A life of mediocrity or a life of challenges and growth?

However, for penetrating-seal treated or oil-treated floors, these types of matte-finished floors require a bit more work, as a penetrating seal or oil finish is soaked into the wood grain, is hardened, and acts to protect the wood from within. These floors should be treated with the utmost in care and protected with some sort of liquid wax or paste.

Lacquered, varnished, shellacked, or even unfinished floors are technically surface-finished, but they are not as resistant to moisture or spills as other sealants. Floors sealed with these types of finishes or those with no finish should be treated like self-penetrating seal-treated or oil-treated floors.

Obviously, the above guidelines are for more thorough cleaning jobs. For periodic waxing and buffing, be sure to get recommendations from your floor's manufacturer to get specific cleaning procedures. However, to protect and maintain your solid investment, here are some easy hardwood floor maintenance tips every homeowner should follow:

1. Invest in a canister vacuum specially designed for hardwood floors or one that has bare floor attachments, and vacuum once or twice a week to remove dust and particles. These types of vacuums usually include soft brush attachments which minimize unnecessary scratching and scuffing. When sweeping, only use a soft, fine bristle broom to gently pick up debris. Floor vacuums are also great for this purpose.

2. Spills and stains can damage the beautiful exterior of hardwood floors and can also warp the wood itself. Immediately remove wet spills with soft towels or a wet/dry vacuum and dry thoroughly. When mopping, use a dry mop, as excess water can seep into seams and ruin a wood floor. Better yet, a high-quality dust mop - one with a 12" to 19" cotton head - can be used instead.

However, be sure to remove all dust, apply the same type of finish that was removed, and always follow manufacturer's instructions if you are unsure on how to repair surface finishes.

4. Consider purchasing carpet runners with non-skid pads over wood floors, especially in high-traffic areas. Carpet runners and area rugs should also be regularly vacuumed to prevent dirt from filtering down the weave and scratching the wood underneath.

5. Furniture pads (available cheaply at your local hardware store, home center, or furniture store) should be placed under the legs of tables and chairs and on the feet of armoires and dressers. Also install floor mats at every entrance to prevent dirt from tracking into your home. Furniture pads will prevent furniture and other objects from dragging and sliding across a wood floor.

6. Whenever possible, refrain from wearing heavy shoes or high heels on your hardwood floors, as these can cause denting.

7. Prevent direct sunlight from damaging, discoloring, or possibly even warping your hardwood floors. Add curtains if necessary, and pull the curtains closed during the day or when you will be away for extended periods of time.
